Next-generation quantum receivers successfully completed

QOPT team has successfully completed a research activity commissioned by the European Space Agency on next generation quantum receivers for deep-space optical communication links. We have been thrilled to apply our expertise in quantum optical technologies to the development of future communication systems for space exploration. While scientific instruments onboard present and planned deep-space missions can collect large volumes of valuable data, their fast and reliable transmission down to Earth remains a technical challenge. Optical communication offers potentially much higher data rates compared to standard radio frequency links, but requires operation in the unconventional photon-starved regime where quantum effects become essential. The activity investigated  a number of options for next generation quantum receivers, which would increase attainable data rates, extend the duration of communication windows, and enable operation in less favourable atmospheric conditions.
